The Toy Box Ate My Brother

The race was on to get a toy
And Thomas was the winner
He beat me to the toy box
But he ended up as dinner

The toy box ate my brother
‘cuz he made a tragic blunder
He entered with a head-first dive
And quickly got pulled under

He kicked his feet and called my name
While our toy box drooled and slurped
I knew dear Thomas was no more
When that toy box loudly burped

No toy box can be trusted
So I make this solemn promise
I’ll rid the world of all of them
In memory of poor Thomas

I know you must be frightened
So I will help you, girls and boys
Just ship your toy box off to me
–along with all your toys!

To help us find our lost Woody we made LOST posters and placed them around the school to let St Urban's know about our problem in Year 1 and to keep a look out for the mischievous toy.

The week we lost Woody!

The week we lost Woody began as a sad one because we didn't know what had happened to him. All we knew was that he had dissappeared from the Toy Shop and we had last seen him there the week before. We searched all over the classroom for him and asked our friends in other classess if they had seen him. Eventually Emilia found him in the cars and tracks box, perhaps Woody had been playing with them in the night. The week ended happily!

Our topic this term is called 'Toy Story' and we are learning about different toys and in particular old toys that were played with by boys and girls along time ago. As part of our learning we played an old playground favourite hopscotch and wrote instructions together as a class on how to play the game. We had lots of fun creating our own designs.

On the first day of the new term Year 1 created a quality line! A quality line is facing forwards, arms by your side standing still and straight and lips closed. Everytime we line up we always try to create that same line from the very first day.

During our first week in Year 1 we enjoyed settling in and getting to know each other. We revisited our skills learnt in Reception in a fun way and enjoyed using our phonics to build words out of play dough and magnetic letters. We also practised our counting skills and ordered numbers to 20 and beyond.

During our first week in Year 1 we also had Independent Learning time!

Year one's News !

Miss Hodgson, Mrs Bolton and Mr Clark would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and children for the lovely gifts and best wishes we have received, this is greatly appreciated. We have enjoyed working with your children and we will miss them dearly and hope they enjoy Year 2 as much as they have Year 1!

Have a lovely Summer!

Thank you very much to those children who took part in our sunflower growing competition, you had all done a fabulous job of looking after them and helping them grow. Well done to Jessica our winner. Her sunflower stood 168cm tall !

Gruffalo Day

This Week KS1 and Foundation enjoyed a Gruffalo Day. We did lots of fun activities like baking buns, making our own Gruffalo's from play dough and taking part in a treasure hunt.

Year one's Beach Hut

During our last term of the school year, we are learning about seaside holidays in the past and comparing them to holidays today. We have created a beach hut role play area within the classroom and would again appreciate any donations of costumes such as beach towels, sunglasses, flip flops, buckets and spades. Also we thought it would be nice to create a photographic display of seaside snaps of the children at the seaside. All of these items can hopefully be used by the children to help provide a fun learning experience for them and everything will be returned to you after the topic.

Thank you

We have sent the sunflowers home for the children to take care of, hopefully they will grow nice and tall for our competition at the end of the summer term.

Term - Summer 2

Year one's Punch and Judy show

We have finished our Punch and Judy puppets and have been performing our own Punch and Judy shows in the classroom !

In literacy we are continuing with the fantasy genre and are now enjoying a range of pirate stories. The children have described a pirate setting using WOW words and created their own pirate character in readiness for writing their own fantasy story next week.

Position of an object

In numeracy this week we have been learning about making 1/4, 1/2 and whole turns, describing the position of an object and directing and moving an object along a route. We really enjoyed directing pirate bee bot around Treasure Island, making sure we avoided palm trees and evil pirates to get to his ship and the treasure. This activity has helped the children with learning their left and right.

Punch and Judy

This week we learnt about the story of Punch and Judy and we have also watched a Punch and Judy show on the whiteboard. We found it very funny and we have begun to make our own Punch and Judy puppets using split pins. We are looking forward to creating our own Punch and Judy shows in our Punch and Judy theatre.

Year one's Ice-Cream Parlour - Numeracy

This week we have been learning about money. We have enjoyed buying ice-creams from our ice-cream parlour using the correct coins to pay for the items and working out how to give change back from 10p and 20p coins.

"Under the sea"

Last week we used different fabric and materials to create colourful collages of our favourite sea creatures. They have been added to our under the sea display. We hope you like them !

This term we are learning about fantasy stories in our literacy lessons and linking them to an underwater theme. In groups we used WOW words to describe underwater fantasy settings and underwater fantasy characters.

Term - Summer 1

Year one's Display Work - Term, Summer 1

Cress Sandwiches

On Thursday afternoon we tasted the cress we have been growing in tasty cress sandwiches.

Fruit Kebabs

On Thursday we enjoyed making the fruit kebabs we designed. We also tasted some exciting tropical fruits like Sharon fruit, passion fruit , lychee ,figs and physalis. We found the soft squishy fruits like strawberries and blueberries easy to put on our skewers but putting the apples on the skewer was more difficult. Our fruit kebabs were yummy !!!

Year One's Garden - Growing Sunflowers

For part of our topic we have planted our own sunflower seeds and we have learnt about the life cycle of a sunflower. We plan to send the sunflowers home at half term for the children to continue to care for them. Please keep us updated as to how they are growing.

We also thought it would be nice to have a sunflower competition where the children could bring back their grown sunflower and the tallest sunflower will win a prize.

'How does your Garden Grow?

This term our topic has been entitled 'How does your Garden Grow? We have been learning about plants and growth. We started our first day of term with an exciting trip to Harlow Carr. Whilst at Harlow Carr we planted some cauliflower seedlings, which we are attempting to grow in our Year 1 garden. We also learnt about the different kinds of seeds you can get from different plants.
